Transportation

Newcastle benefits from excellent rail, road, ferry and air links, making it one of the best connected and accessible cities in Britain.

With an international airport right outside the city centre, to the city’s location  on some of Britain’s main rail and road networks, and an extensive urban Metro  system, Newcastle is ideally located for delegates from around the  world and UK.

Arriving by train

Newcastle Central Station is right in the heart of the city centre and offers  direct services to and from most major British cities, with many routes  served by high-speed rail links. Nearly 200 trains arrive in Newcastle every  day from across the country, over 40 of which are direct from London  Kings Cross in under three hours, also allowing easy access to St Pancras  International and Eurostar connections for those delegates wishing to  travel to and from Europe by train.

To encourage delegates to travel more sustainably, our local team are working  closely with LNER (London North Eastern Railway), the primary rail operators  for the main east coast mainline from London to Inverness. We are also working with Lumo who plays a vital role in the north of England by connecting tens of thousands of people to work, leisure, education and more every day.

This allows delegates to explore other areas of Britain before or after their time at the conference.

On arrival at Newcastle International Airport, delegates can choose from a range of travel options for the short journey into Newcastle city centre. The Metro route from the airport to the city centre is the most sustainable option and one of the fastest in Europe, taking only 27 minutes. The Airport has its own Tyne and Wear Metro station located within the arrival and departure terminal, with trains departing for the city centre every 12 minutes.

Driving to Newcastle

Newcastle is very well connected to the rest of the UK by road. The A1 motorway – one of the largest roads in the country, connecting London up to Edinburgh – passes through the city, linking the area to London, the South, Scotland and major routes across the country.

Other major road links include the A19, which connects the city to other major urban centres in the north of England, such as Sunderland, Middlesbrough, York and Doncaster. The A69 stretches to the north west of the country, and the A696, A68 and A167 connect the city to Northumberland and to the central Scottish Borders.

The journey to London by road takes just over five hours, with Edinburgh around two hours thirty minutes, and Manchester just under three hours.

There is no free parking available at Northumbria University, but there are plenty of paid-for car parks close by:

Getting around Newcastle

Newcastle is a compact city centre, and we’re proud of our status as a 15-minute destination, meaning delegates can walk or cycle and have access to local goods and services within only a few minutes.

The Tyne and Wear Metro system is the second largest light rail system in Britain, second only to London’s Underground. The Metro connects key locations around the region, calling at 60 stations across the North East. Newcastle Central Station contains its own Metro station, located directly underneath the rail terminus, making it ideal for links to national rail. Metro services link central Newcastle with Newcastle International Airport in only 27 minutes, and the stunning North Sea coast can be reached in half an hour.
