Uniting Human and Machine Intelligence to Support Data Discovery and Decision-Making

Join us for a CHIWORK conversation on October 13, 2022 at 11am EST about “Uniting Human and Machine Intelligence to Support Data Discovery and Decision-Making”.

Even though the artificial intelligence and machine learning communities have produced highly accurate solutions for domains such as scientific discovery and medical diagnosis, they remain underused or completely ignored. Still, society is at an impasse where the available data is often too much for humans to consume, even with the best visualization practices, underscoring the need to combine the strengths of both humans and algorithms. Such human-AI collaborative approaches are critical in scientific discovery, medicine, and intelligence analysis as domain experts have profound experience and intuition for the mechanisms driving the system of interest and the nuances of their particular goals. We will discuss a potential future in which algorithms can proactively adapt to human actions by monitoring their attention and behavior and predicting their workflows. We will also discuss the current technological limitations and implications of factors such as individual differences, distrust, and overtrust.
