2022 witnessed perhaps the greatest progress in artificial intelligence (AI) development to date, from the release of Dall-E 2 to the beta testing of ChatGPT. These AI advances are possible thanks to millions of data producers, from artists to writers to programmers, contributing training data. Data producers like you and me are the crucial but often overlooked labor force behind many of the glamorous AI models that are currently grabbing news headlines and winning praise. In this discussion, I will highlight issues related to consent, monetization, and power in the extraction of data labor. I will also discuss what policies and design interventions could help to make AI development more consent-driven and equitable.
